Museum of Graphic Arts

Overlooking the Lungarno Galilei and housed in the rooms of the 16th-century Palazzo Lanfranchi, the Museum of Graphic Arts of the University of Pisa is one of the most important public collections of contemporary graphic arts, with over 3,000 works periodically displayed in temporary exhibitions held throughout the year.

MUSEUM OF GRAPHIC ARTS

Housed in the rooms of the 16th-century Palazzo Lanfranchi, the museum preserves and exhibits the collections of the Department of Drawings and Prints of the University of Pisa. Started in 1957 by Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti, it is one of the most important public collections of contemporary graphic arts and presents an artistic panorama of the highest level. Through the great intellectual legacy of figures such as Sebastiano Timpanaro, Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti, and Giulio Carlo Argan, it sheds light on the artistic events of the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the most significant collections is the Timpanaro Fund, consisting of more than a thousand pieces, which includes a precious core of etchings by Giovanni Fattori as well as drawings and engravings by leading figures of the early 20th century. Also of great interest is the Argan Fund, comprising more than 600 sheets of engravings and drawings, documenting the relationships of the great art historian and critic with 20th-century artists. Alongside the permanent collection, which is exhibited on a rotating basis to protect its state of conservation, a rich calendar of temporary exhibitions is offered. In the multimedia room, a selection of works is made available to the public, which can be browsed virtually thanks to four touch screen kiosks. Educational, cultural, and recreational initiatives are regularly scheduled for a very wide audience, including families, the elderly, students, and people with special needs.
