Monumental Complex of the Certosa di Calci<\/a><\/h4>

The Certosa rises on the Pisan hills. Founded in 1366 as a monastery of the order of Saint Bruno, it owes its grandiose present appearance, with frescoes, stuccoes, and furnishings, to the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century transformations that nevertheless maintain the internal subdivisions functional to the Carthusian rule. It stands as one of the major examples of Baroque architecture in Tuscany.
